Prevalence of the <i>bla</i> <sub>CTX-M</sub> and <i>bla</i> <sub>TEM</sub> genes among extended-spectrum beta lactamase–producing <i>Escherichia coli</i> isolated from broiler chickens in Indonesia

Abstract Introduction Infections of humans and animals by multidrug resistant bacteria are increasing because the inappropriate use antibiotics. Disease management may be more challenging if Escherichia coli produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), which could cause resistance to aztreonam third-generation cephalosporins. This study was aimed at determining prevalence bla CTX-M TEM genes among ESBL-producing E. isolated from broiler chickens in Indonesia. Material Methods A total 115 cloacal swab samples were obtained 22 farms studied for presence . The isolates identified using approved standard methods purified on eosin methylene blue agar media. subjected sensitivity testing beta-lactam antibiotics, ESBL production confirmed a double-disc synergy test. PCR. Results It found that 99/115 (86.1%) antibiotics 34/115 (29.6%) them phenotypically detected producers. Of 34 producers, 32/34 (94.1%) harboured 13/34 (38.2%) genes. together 12/34 (35.3%) isolates. Conclusion discovered possible reservoirs infect humans. Thus, committed public health education campaign is recommended order mitigate potential threat human health.
